The Town-Twinning movement, commenced in Europe shortly after the Second World War, and now links many citizens and towns across Europe, the original idea was to enable communities from different cultures and countries to know and understand each other better.
Twinning is all about bringing people together and developing partnerships between towns of other nations. It provides opportunities for exchange visits and great personal friendships have developed between the citizens of many diverse towns and cities across Europe and the world.
The Newbridge twinning groups organise exchange visits each year with both Bad Lippspringe and Ocala, and by all accounts the craic is great during these visits.
The two Twinning agreements entered into by Newbridge have been very successful to date.
Some benefits of twinning are:
- Cultural exchanges between townspeople;
- Economic development and trade opportunities;
- A forum for discussion and exchange of ideas;
- Sporting events are organised, football, boxing etc.
- Student exchanges, language development and educational opportunities;
- An opportunity for a well-earned holiday!
Newbridge is twinned with the spa town of Bad Lippspringe in East Westphalia, Germany since 1997; it’s a wonderful town and can boast excellent spas, a large forest, shops, cafés, restaurants and wonderful parks. Bad Lippspringe has a population of approximately 15,000 inhabitants. Check Facebook Page DIPI Newbridge – Bad Lippspringe
Newbridge is twinned with the City of Ocala, a city in Marion County, Florida since 2009: a town is well matched with Newbridge as it is styled the “Horse Capital of the World”. Ocala has a population of some 56,000 inhabitants (about twice the size of Newbridge), and like Newbridge it is surrounded by numerous stud farms.
