Newbridge - Your Town - It's easy to make a difference
Kildare Heritage Plan
The Kildare Heritage Plan was formally launched by the County Councils Mayor Hillis on the 30th May 2005. The Heritage Plan outlines the objectives adopted to protect and enghance heritage issues in the County. Newbridge Tidy Towns Association welcomes the publication of the Heritage Plan, and looks forward to assisting in the realisation of the plan.
Newbridge Tidy Towns Association made a submission to Kikdare County Council's deliberations on the proposed County Development Plan.
Here are some of the issues raised in our submission:
While we must aim to conserve our heritage, it is probably impractical to expect that everything can remain, therefore there is a need to prioritize what items from our past should be protected, conserved and managed. This being said, it must always be borne in mind that our built and cultural heritage is unique and once lost can never be replaced.
There are a number of monuments scattered around the county, and other archalaeogical sites of importance:
Develop and pilot an initiative to promote greater awareness of historically significant monuments, structures & sites whether protected or otherwise.
Carry out an audit of Kildare's protected or unprotected significant structures, providing a database of buildings and structures of heritage, historical, architectural and archaeological value in Kildare detailing their current condition.
Consider the implications / practicalities of the illumination of historic / heritage properties.
Promote the need for a “duty of care” by site owners, developers and the farming community, by which we mean that archeological investigations should be provided for when developing sites adjacent to or including the sites of ancient habitats, burial areas, rath's etc.
Consideration should be given to compiling a comprehensive listing of heritage objects; by this we mean road markers, traditional water pumps, post boxes & pillars etc. These items are fast being removed from the roadside whether by design or through theft.

Consideration should be given to commissioning Conservation reports for Heritage sites, auditing of the condition and work needed for the proper investigation and conservation of monastic sites and other historic sites in the county.

The County Heritage Plan is available on Kildare County Councils Website www.kildare.ie or by mail from the County Councils offices in Naas.
