IBAL Survey Published January 2008

Newbridge: 41st out of 50 towns / cities surveyed.

This report should be read in conjunction with the previous IBAL litter survey of 2007.

There has been some improvement at Newbridge – last time it came bottom of the fifty towns / cities surveyed and there had been no sites with the top litter grade. There were two which got the top litter grade this time around (Liffey Side Park and Approach Road from the Curragh). A couple of the sites which had moderate levels of litter could also be improved with a little extra effort, care and attention e.g. Moor Park and Old Connell.

Dublin / Naas Approach Road:
Moderately Littered. Some stretches of this road were very good but it was let down by litter from parked cars / lorries. All of the litter present was food related.

Main Street:
Moderately Littered. There have been overall improvements at this site. This time around the biggest problem was the profusion of cigarette butts at the base of the ornamental trees. There were also some plastic bottles scattered about. There were plenty of litter bins along this street.

Newbridge Industrial Estate:
Moderately Littered. As with so many other sites in Newbridge this has also seen an improvement. However, it still has a little way to go as there was a wide variety of litter scattered throughout.

Liffey Side Park:
Clean to European Norms. This is a lovely amenity which has been well cared for and respected by the users. New benches / tables have been installed and they were in good condition. Overall, this was a very good site.

Moore Park:
Moderately Littered. Not much effort is required for this residential area to get the highest litter grade. Just a small amount of fast-food wrappers and plastic bottles took away from an otherwise well maintained site.

Old Connell:
Moderately Littered. A more thorough approach to cleaning would easily address the small quantities of litter present at this site.

Scoil Connload Naomha – Outside:
Moderately Littered. All of the litter at this site was food related and some of it appears to have come from the parked cars / buses in the area. Cigarette butts were particularly prevalent.

Scoil Connload Naomha – Inside:
Moderately Littered. It would seem that much of the litter at this site was thrown over the wall, from outside the school. As well as the food related litter there were beer bottles.

Newbridge National School – Inside:
Clean to European Norms. This was an excellent site. It was in far better condition than previous IBAL litter surveys. Credit is due to school staff / those responsible for the maintenance.

Approach Road from the Curragh:
Moderately Littered. The lay-by area for lorries was in particularly good condition and clear of litter. Clearly this approach route into Newbridge is getting more attention as it was one of many which had improved hugely.
