Newbridge IBAL Report December 2006
There has been some improvement in Newbridge since it was surveyed earlier in the year. This time around there were four excellent sites – there were none the last time.
Both the primary and secondary schools (inside and outside) were in very good condition and deserve a special mention.
By far the worst site in Newbridge was the Main Street which had a serious litter problem. Not only were there heavy levels of a wide variety of litter but clearly the area is not being cleaned sufficiently, especially at the base of the ornamental trees. Graffiti, overflowing and dirty bins all contributed to the dejected appearance of the street.
Naas Approach Road (R445):
Moderately Littered.
(The area surveyed was from the roundabout at Tougher Garage, near where the Red House was). A more thorough approach is required to both the cleaning and the general maintenance of this stretch of road. Not only was there a wide variety of litter but the road / footpath was uneven and the shrubbery was poorly maintained.
Tougher’s Business Park:
Moderately Littered.
While this business park development was still a ‘work in progress’ there were light scatterings of litter in the already completed area. All of the litter present was food related.
Patrician Secondary School - Outside and Inside:
Clean to European Norms.
Both the inside and outside of the school grounds were in excellent condition. In particular, the outside deserves special mention as it was much cleaner than previous litter surveys. The area is well landscaped and clearly a whole hearted approach to litter management is in place.
Patrician National / Primary School (1914) – Outside and Inside:
Clean to European Norms.
The high standards obtained during previous litter survey (outside of the grounds) have been sustained – the area was spotless. The grounds of the school were well maintained and the overall picture was very positive.
Main Street:
Serious Litter Problem.
There has been a big deterioration along the Main Street since it was surveyed earlier in the year. While there were plenty of litter bins they were in a poor condition. There were heavy amounts of a wide variety of litter present and much of it was trapped at the base of the ornamental trees – clearly a more thorough approach to cleaning these bases is required. Heavy levels of cigarette butts / chewing gum, overflowing bins and graffiti also contributed to the dejected appearance.
Newbridge Railway Station:
Moderately Littered.
Some very small scatterings of litter took away from an otherwise good site. This busy station was in good condition, despite the on-going works and the area is well served by litter bins.
Eyre Street and side street, Patrick Street:
Moderately Littered.
(Runs parallel to Main Street). All of the litter present along this small, old street was food related, particularly from a fast-food outlet. There were no litter bins or cigarette butts / chewing gum disposal facilities in the area surveyed and given the nature of the outlets they are evidently needed.
Connell residential area:
Moderately Littered.
(On left on approach from Dublin). Some light scatterings of litter prevented this attractively landscaped area from getting a higher litter classification. With just a little extra care and attention this could be resolved.
